The world's longest sea bridge
The new 36km highway crossing between Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau improves access between mainland China and the two Special Administrative Regions. The design includes an immersed tube sea tunnel of 6km and 30km of viaduct including three major cable-stayed bridges.
The DB02 Contract comprised the western part of the sea crossing and included the 525m-long Jiu Zhou Port Channel cable-stayed bridge with a ‘sail’ motif. This refers to the historic trade routes associated with the Pearl River coast. The detailed design was developed based on the preliminary design prepared by Arup.
In addition, the client HKZM Bridge Authority instructed Knight Architects to prepare alternative aesthetic designs for the two other cable-stayed navigation spans on the crossing, the 930m-long two-tower Qing Zhou and 774m-long three-tower JHZD bridges.
In spite of their different spans and tower heights, a close family aesthetic was developed to satisfy the client’s wish for a harmonious and familiar relationship between all the main structures.
