Reimagining a lost historic icon while connecting the riverbanks

As one of four teams commissioned to develop a design for the replacement structure of the Carolabrücke in Dresden, which collapsed in September 2024, the team faced several interconnected challenges. The technical requirements had to be balanced with strong community aspirations and the sensitive and iconic historic setting, while observing the requisites that allow for a planning approval-free procedure.

The team's final design combines the visual language of the original 1895 Königin-Carolabrücke with its slender arches, and the high degree of transparency of the second Carolabrücke from 1971. With the new bridge's low profile staying close to that of its predecessor's, the silhouette of the old town is fully respected, preserving or even enhancing existing views. At the same time, the team succeeded in visually reintegrating the new Carola Bridge into Dresden’s family of arch bridges despite the demanding constraints imposed by shipping on the Elbe and the required traffic connections.

Enhancing the bridge's functionality, a generous 5m-wide pedestrian walkway facing the historic city centre was included, offering an attractive public space that invites visitors to stroll and enjoy the views. This path splits towards both ends of the bridge, using 'seating steps' along the seam and joining a ramped connection that, for the first time, creates a direct link to the riverbanks of the Elbe.
