Little Current Swing Bridge Replacement

Knight Architects is acting as the aesthetic lead for the design of the new Little Current Swing Bridge, which will replace the original bridge constructed for the railway in 1913. Over more than a century, the existing bridge has become a cherished landmark and an important part of the community’s identity. Its distinctive form is widely recognised throughout the region and is featured on local products, logos, and branding, reflecting its cultural significance and strong connection to place.

As the sole access point to Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world, the bridge plays a critical role in supporting daily life, economic activity, and emergency services. The replacement structure must therefore provide the reliability, safety, and functionality required for modern transportation while respecting the heritage value of the existing bridge. Knight Architects is carefully balancing these requirements, developing a design that meets present and future needs while drawing inspiration from, and paying tribute to, the character and legacy of the historic structure it replaces.
