Protecting a heritage asset through sensitive design
With its memorable architecture and distinctive opening mechanism, Tower Bridge is one of the most recognisable bridges in the world. It is a highly designated structure whose identity is synonymous with the City of London and the United Kingdom as a whole.
Like many historic bridges that are a placemaking asset and tourist attraction, the Grade I listed structure is highly protected by planning laws. Yet it remains a working bridge, providing a vital connection across the River Thames, with around 40,000 motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians using it daily.
Knight Architects are pleased to be working again with City Bridge Foundation – the 900-year-old charity which looks after Tower Bridge at no cost to the taxpayer – and the City of London Corporation on one of several projects designed to sensitively improve the resilience of this unique bridge while protecting its heritage.
Together with Alan Baxter, EMMAUS Consulting, Hardesty & Hanover, PIB Risk Management and Watts, the team are working on the refurbishment of the six bascule chambers to improve the structural and mechanical performance of the bridge and the safety of its operation, ensuring that it remains a reliable connection as well as a treasured feature of London’s skyline for centuries to come.
