A new civic asset for Dresden: Carolabrücke 3.0
03 June 2026
Following the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge in September 2024, the City of Dresden started planning for the reconstruction of this major transport artery. Knight Architects, together with LAP Consulting Engineers and Querfeldeins, is one of four teams that has submitted a proposal for the replacement crossing.
Our design combines the visual language of the original 1895 Königin-Carolabrücke with its slender arches, and the high degree of transparency of the second Carolabrücke from 1971. With the new bridge's low profile staying close to that of its predecessor's, the silhouette of the old town is fully respected, preserving or even enhancing existing views. A generous 5m-wide pedestrian walkway facing the historic city centre has been incorporated, leading at both ends to the River Elbe - the first time a direct link to the riverbanks has been created.
From 13 June to 17 July, the designs will be exhibited in the City Forum and citizens will be able to submit their vote via the online participation platform “carolaVOTE”.
