Bermuda Swing Bridge moves to tender phase
31 March 2026
The Government of Bermuda has published the construction tender for the Swing Bridge Replacement. Connecting LF Wade International Airport with St George's island, the replacement highway crossing will enhance ferry, vehicular, and pedestrian transport across the archipelago, supporting lasting economic and social benefits.
Designed by Knight Architects, Ramboll, and Eadon Consulting Ltd, Swing Bridge Replacement is a state-of-the-art bascule bridge (replacing the previous swing bridge typology). Its distinctive shell-shaped lifting structure references local identity while incorporating Bermuda's vibrant signature colour palette; a testament to Bermuda’s rich history and cultural heritage. The bridge and its operating equipment are designed specifically for resilience, durability and maintainability, given Bermuda’s location situated in the Atlantic Ocean. With its ergonomic streamlined form eliminating dirt, water and corrosion traps, the design delivers a wider, safer cross-section with dedicated pedestrian access, increased clearance for vessels, and improved vertical alignment.
The new Bridge’s position, adjacent to the international airport, provides a distinctive welcome for visitors to the island, celebrating Bermuda's architectural heritage. The bridge is one of a pair designed by this team, with Longbird Bridge expected to follow to market in the future.
Construction is anticipated to start in late 2026.
