Little Current Swing Bridge replacement project adds to Ontario portfolio
10 December 2025
We are delighted to be part of the Stantec-led team awarded the detail design contract by the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MTO) for the replacement of the Little Current Swing Bridge at Manitoulin Island in Canada.
The new two-lane moveable swing bridge, which will replace the existing single-lane 1913 structure, is part of Ontario’s $30 billion plan to build, repair and expand critical transportation infrastructure across the province.
As the only road crossing to the 1,000-square mile Manitoulin Island, the 270m-long bridge will improve access and resilience, including for emergency services, while supporting businesses by helping to drive economic growth and tourism across the region. During peak summer months, approximately 4,500 vehicles rely on the bridge each day, while the 112m-moveable span must open hourly for recreational vessels on this popular boating route.
“By building a new and wider bridge, we’re supporting the community’s continued economic growth and ensuring residents have reliable year-round access to our province’s highway network for the next 110 years.”
