New name for Sunderland's newest crossing
11 June 2025
Sunderland’s new footbridge has officially been named Keel Crossing, a name chosen by local residents to celebrate the city’s proud shipbuilding heritage.
The city's newest crossing spans 260m across and rises 30m above the River Wear, extending the iconic Keel Line and establishing a vital connection between Keel Square and the Stadium of Light. This strategic link strengthens access to Riverside Sunderland, a new sustainable urban quarter, and supports a key axis of public realm and cultural identity.
We can't wait to see our active mobility, inclusivity and accessibility design work in action later this summer when Keel Crossing opens.
