Belfast City Council appoints Architect-led team to develop Sailortown to Titanic Quarter bridge

06 January 2026

A great start to 2026 as Belfast City Council has appointed Knight Architects - together with Arup, Eadon Consulting and Chandler KBS - to develop the Outline Business Case for a new moveable active mobility bridge across the river Lagan.

Procured by the council’s Regeneration Framework and funded by the Shared Island Initiative, the much-needed project will support sustainable travel; provide enhanced public realm and amenity space; and ensure continued movement of maritime traffic to the upriver sections of the river Lagan.

With the nearest bank-to-bank structure c.900m upriver, the new moveable bridge will link the Sailortown community with the economic opportunities on Queen’s Island. The bridge will also complete the Harbour Loop, creating an uninterrupted active travel corridor along both sides of the river Lagan - from the Lagan Gateway to the uppermost point of the northern dockside.

“The waterfront setting and the city's shipbuilding history combine with modal shift opportunities to make this a very exciting project. With our partners, we are looking forward to working on this transformational scheme for the people of Belfast.”

- Héctor Beade, Design Director at Knight Architects
